The President’s Visioning Committee on Cornell in New York City seeks proposals for faculty-led initiatives to expand the opportunities for learning and research in New York City for our faculty and students. Priority will be given to proposals that are responsive to themes that were identified through open faculty collaboration sessions. Some of the identified themes were topical: Arts & Humanities and Algorithms & Inequality. Others described the types of programs of particular interest to faculty:  Community Engaged Learning and Research, Professional Education, and K-12 Education. Exciting and innovative proposals that address other themes will also be given close consideration. Consistent with President Pollack’s “One Cornell” priority, all proposals should explain how they both enhance and connect to work being done on the Ithaca campus.

Proposals must:

1. Focus on supporting academic research and/or enhancing curricular innovation and pedagogy
2. Include at least two collaborating faculty members (different colleges strongly encouraged but not required)
3. Offer a unique approach that highlights Cornell’s distinctive strengths, whether the project is newly created or related to existing activities
4. Help to identify infrastructure needs for expanding Ithaca-NYC integrations (i.e. office and/or classroom space, housing, etc.)
5. Be able to demonstrate tangible progress within a one-year timeframe
6. Show promise for alumni and/or student engagement (preferred but not required)

The committee will support no more than three pilot projects from its $250,000 budget in this first round. All Cornell faculty members are eligible to apply.

Additional terms:

1. Funding can begin in either summer or fall 2019.
2. To maximize use of these resources, funding may not be used to hire additional staff. However, it is appropriate to allocate funding to support existing staff to engage in new or different activities.
3. Awardees must submit a mid-term progress report and a final report to the president’s office at the end of the one-year funding period.
4. Proposals may include 1/9th in summer salary support in order to assist faculty as they prepare to launch projects for the fall or complete projects in summer of 2020.

Faculty interested in submitting a proposal should prepare a 3-4 page document that includes: 1) A summary of the overall project; 2) The goals of the project, including short-term and long-term impacts; 3) Research strategy; 4) Plans for long-term financial sustainability; 4) Budget and budget justification; 5) Names, disciplines and qualifications of all faculty members involved.

Proposals must be submitted to nyc-visioning@cornell.edu by May 6, 2019.

The President’s NYC Visioning Committee will evaluate all proposals and make recommendations to the president.  Final selections will be announced in early June.
